Rights Respecting School - Recognition of Commitment
Work together, play together, grow together
BURGH Primary School
Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely summer holiday. The children are settling well into their class and are enjoying making new friends. We have another busy year ahead and the children are already becoming familiar with the new routines and responsibilities of P2/3. We have recently created our own Class Charter where we have found out more about the UN Rights of the Child and will be sharing our learning at our school assembly. We have also created a Class Vision which outlines our aims for the year.
Following a class discussion, the children voted to explore ‘Space’ as our first topic of P2/3. They completed a ‘What I’d Like to Know’ mind-map in small groups and these ideas will lead our learning. We will find out more about famous astronauts, life in the International Space Station, space transportation, planets in the solar system and much more!
Things to do at home to support our class topic
  • Visit your local library to find some fiction and non-fiction books relating to space.
  • Visit https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub to find out all about space missions.
Reading – Your child will receive two reading books each week, with reading comprehension activities to complete in class and at home. Please encourage your child to practise reading regularly, not only with their group reading book.
Writing – The children will explore writing across different areas of the curriculum and will continue to develop their accuracy in writing independently.
Spelling – The children will continue to follow the Active Literacy Phonics into Spelling Approach. We will use multi-sensory spelling strategies when practising our phoneme words. Ideas for spelling strategies can be found in the front of your child’s homework jotter.
Listening and talking We will have opportunities across the curriculum to engage in building our listening and talking skills. This includes asking and answering questions in class during teaching time.

To start our year, we will be revising our knowledge of Place Value. This includes our knowledge of numbers to 100, as well as the importance of 0 as a place holder. The number bonds are printed inside your child’s homework diary which they can use for revision, as well as a 100 square which they should be encouraged to use regularly.

Our Science topic this term will be ‘Planet Earth’. P2 will be focussing on Living Things and P3 will find out about Properties of Water.

Health and Wellbeing
In HWB, we have started learning through ‘Jigsaw’ where we met our Jigsaw Friend ‘Jack’ who helps us to talk during teaching time. We have been using our Jigsaw Chime to practise slow breathing and calmness. Ask your child about this!
In PE we will be building our skills in athletics and gymnastics.

The P2s will be working on logging into the computer independently this term and becoming familiar with the layout of the keyboard. P3s will be building their skills in Microsoft Word.

Additional Information
Our P.E. days this year are Tuesday and Thursday. Please note that all jewellery must be removed on these days. Please ensure your child brings their homework folder to school every day as reading books are required in class.
