Curriculum Update
Social Studies

Our topic this term will be about ‘Old Rutherglen’ where pupils will learn about some of Rutherglen’s history, comparing how it is now with how it used to be in the past.  We will also be developing our skills in line drawing, shape and pattern by exploring some of the architecture in Rutherglen and having a go at creating some of these buildings ourselves.

For reading, pupils will continue to progress through the appropriate stage of the Rigby Star guided reading programme. The children will be taught reading using a range of reading strategies in order to develop their understanding of the texts read.
Phonics and Spelling
We will be carrying out a range of spelling activities each day in class using the Active Literacy Approach. This will take the form of whole class, partner and independent work. In addition to this, spelling will be set as homework for consolidation.
This term we will be using our class topic, ‘Old Rutherglen’ as stimulus for creating a range of non-fiction texts, including; letters and reports. Grammar and punctuation will be visited regularly throughout the term.

Pupils will take part in a variety of activities to facilitate their learning in Numeracy and Mathematics using the Heinemann Active Maths resource.  This term we will be working through the following topics:
  • Place value
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Patterns and Sequences
  • Measuring lengths of time
  • Information Handling

Miss McIntosh will cover Science this term, where the pupils will be investigating the properties of water. They will make and test predictions about solids dissolving in water, relating their findings to the world around them.

Religious and Moral Education
This term in RME, the children will be learning about ‘Belonging’, where they will continue to develop their awareness of the beliefs and values of others. We will be exploring aspects of Christianity and Hinduism.

Health and wellbeing
In PE, our focus will be working on developing our running, jumping and throwing skills.  Pupils will engage in a range of athletics activities in order to achieve this.
Our Wellbeing topic this term will look at ‘Being Me in My World’ where the pupils will explore a range of ideas including looking at what their hopes and fears, rights and responsibilities for the year ahead are.

In ICT, we will be learning how to research information using the internet as well as using google maps to explore our local area linked to our Rutherglen topic.
We will also develop our skills in using Microsoft as we learn how to change the font, size and colour of our typing as well as adding shapes and symbols to our Word Documents.
To aid familiarisation of the keyboard, your child could practise using the bbc website www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing.
